Gift Ideas for the Green Thumb in Your Life

In our latest post, we shared five tips for a more sustainable gift-giving season. Now that you have those ideas in the back of your pocket and are ready to embark on the shopping journey, you might be looking for specific gift ideas for certain individuals in your life.

The pandemic has brought out the green thumbs in a lot of us, and we wanted to share a few gift ideas for the gardener and houseplant parent in your life!🌳

Plant One Forward” and support a local plant business

One of our favorite pastimes is visiting local plant nurseries and botanical gardens. When the pandemic hit, we were unable to go to our usual spots because NYC was one of many cities that implemented strict protocols to flatten the curve and limit the spread of the disease. As a result, small plant businesses have struggled to stay afloat with limited customer interaction opportunities.

In an effort to support local plant businesses, Summer Rayne Oakes of Homestead Brooklyn started the Plant One Forward Initiative, which allows the community to submit and share our favorite plant shops so people everywhere can continue supporting these businesses! You can find a plant shop that delivers to your loved ones and help them continue their operations.

Grow kit

If you have a loved one who enjoys spending time in the kitchen, you might consider getting them something they can grow in their home or outdoor space. There are many grow kits available out there, and we especially like how simple Back to the Roots’ grow kits. The best part about their model is their #GrowOneGiveOne campaign -- for every photo featuring their kit, they’ll donate a gardening kit a curriculum to an elementary school of your choice!

Design a planter pot

For the creatives out there, you can gift a one-of-a-kind planter pot designed by you! There are eco-friendly paints you can look into purchasing, but any craft paint you may have around your home should also work well.

Plant a tree

If you’re looking for a meaningful gift that will help fight climate change, consider planting a tree in your loved one’s name. There are many organizations where you can make a donation that goes toward planting a tree, such as:

Added bonus: If you’re looking to do something locally, you can also help plant a tree in your community.
